Located in south-central Iowa, Buxton was a coal mining town in the early 1900s. The majority of the town's population was African American. For over two decades, the town provided equal opportunities and incomes for African American and White residents. The town was virtually abandoned in the 1920s.
The BP Area Museum is honored to host this traveling exhibit of interviews, photographs, and artifacts collected during the excavation of Buxton conducted by Iowa State University scholars.
